The outreach ministries of U District churches support a broad range of social service organizations vital to the neighborhood. Most of its more than 20 service providers are housed within church buildings dispersed throughout the neighborhood. Other services are located elsewhere in the city.

Organizations in the U District address many serious needs. Emergency shelter, groceries, hot meals, transitional housing, hygiene facilities, child care, health care, drop-in programs, case management, education, arts activities, job training, and advocacy assistance are generally available. However, due to shortages of space and other resources, people in need are too often turned away.
